About the Area
Gillette, rich in coal, oil, natural gas, and uranium, is situated between the Black Hills and the Big Horn Mountains. In the summer, sign up for a free coal mine tour (see link below). You are likely to see a 400-ton drag line bucket that holds 50 people…..without being crowded. The coal produced here powers 30 % of the electricity used in the United States.
